A breaker that trips is doing its job. A breaker that trips repeatedly is telling you something, and which something it is determines whether this is a minor annoyance or genuinely urgent.
Start here: a tripping breaker is a safety device working
The instinct is to find the breaker annoying. It isn't the problem — it's the thing standing between a fault and a fire. Any advice that amounts to making it stop tripping without finding out why, including fitting a larger breaker, is dangerous. A breaker is sized to protect the wire behind it. Fit a bigger one and the wire becomes the fuse.
Overload: the common and boring one
Too much on one circuit. A space heater and a microwave on the same kitchen circuit will do it. It usually trips a while after you switch things on, and it's reproducible — the same combination trips it every time.
The fix is redistributing what's plugged in, or adding a dedicated circuit if a particular appliance needs one. If it keeps happening across several circuits, the real issue is that the house doesn't have enough capacity for how it's now being used.
Short circuit: immediate and sharp
A hot conductor touching a neutral or ground. It trips instantly and forcefully, often the moment you switch something on, and may be accompanied by a bang, a spark or a burning smell. Frequently it's a failed appliance rather than the wiring — unplug everything on the circuit and reset; if it holds, reintroduce items one at a time.
Ground fault: usually near water
Current escaping to ground. GFCI outlets and breakers detect this deliberately and cut power fast, which is why they're required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoors. Repeated ground faults in a wet area often mean moisture where it shouldn't be.
Arc fault: the one people misread
AFCI breakers detect the signature of arcing — a loose connection or damaged cable producing small sparks. They're a newer requirement and homeowners often assume a "faulty new breaker" because nothing seems wrong. Sometimes it is nuisance tripping. Sometimes there's a genuine loose connection inside a wall, which is exactly the fault that starts fires. It needs diagnosing, not assuming.
When to stop and call
Stop resetting and get an electrician out if you notice any of: a burning or hot-plastic smell, a panel or outlet that's warm to the touch, scorch marks or discolouration, a buzzing or crackling sound, or a breaker that won't reset at all. Those aren't nuisance symptoms — they indicate heat somewhere it shouldn't be.
Also worth a call if the same breaker trips repeatedly with nothing unusual plugged in. That pattern usually means the fault is in the wiring rather than the load, and it doesn't get better on its own.
